Oaxaca

Image
We arrived safe and sound in Oaxaca a few days ago now and we can’t get enough of the place. Oaxaca is very beautiful, colourful place with endless cafe bars, restaurants, artisan shops and generally just a feeling of home. It’s a fairly bohemian city, with only the occasional armed policeman on street corners. We are staying in a very nice, basic hotel at the grand price of £24 a night so we are more than happy. It even has a rooftop where I can pop out the yoga mat 😁. Ordering food is our biggest downfall, and apart from knowing that Tristan’s meal is vegetarian, who knows what we are going to get. All we know is that it’s going to combine beans, avocado, and chicken with some beautiful spicy salsas in a corn something or other (taco, tortilla etc) for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Needless to say, the boys are craving their usual good ol’ English breakfast cereal, and I must say we are a little too. The boys are also a little fed up with having their heads blown off with the spicy f...

Puebla

Image
We have spent the last few days in the vibrant city of Puebla, a much smaller city 2 hours South of Mexico City. We’ve experienced a bit more of the ‘real’ Mexico here, visiting local markets and experiencing the culinary delights of Mexico albeit, cows hooves and pigs spines! Tristan was of course disgusted by it all, but did try some potato things that apparently tasted of fish 😳. Puebla is much quieter than Mexico City, but still HUGE with a population of 1.2million people. Puebla boasts beautiful colonial architecture and many artisan cafes, galleries etc, and generally the feeling of many European cities. It does still have a bit of ‘edge’ about it though, with armed policeman on every street corner and massive police trucks passing you by every few minutes. We stayed in a gorgeous hostel which was very vibrant and felt very safe, and one of the best I’ve ever stayed in. We have now learnt that dorm beds have curtains around each individual bed, a few years too late I reckon!! Wh...

Mariposa Monarca butterflies

Image
We left Mexico City via bus a few days ago to a town called Zitácuaro so that we could visit a UNESCO heritage site to see millions of Monarch butterflies that fly to this area for a few months of the year. The butterflies come to mate in the pine forests, which are absolutely beautiful and featured on one of David Attenborough programmes. On the big climb up to see the butterflies, which was a bit of an undertaking considering the high altitude (in fact only the hardy don’t take the horse!!!), we saw lots of wildlife including hummingbirds and an amazing red bird. Take a look here at what we’ve seen if you would like. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b010t6c0 . The actual place was very surreal considering it was a world heritage site. According to Seb, the place was full of ‘dodgies’ and Americans (on horses!!), and of course we were met at the entrance by the enormous police truck with machine guns at the ready!!! We treated ourselves to a beautiful hotel with a swimming pool to esc...

Mexico City

Image
We originally thought we would immerse our children slowly into this adventure but oh no, let’s just go full throttle! We arrived in Mexico City at 6AM but it’s definitely not quiet. The usual noise of a city but with a constant hoot of the horn, dogs barking, sirens sirening(!) and the general kerfuffle of Mexicans opening up their endless Taco stands. We have spent 5 days now in the city and it’s definitely a positive start. The city is very spread out so not the easiest to see all the sites, but that’s made us get our big-family pants on 😂 and travel like the locals on the Metro, buses etc. We’ve visited museums (much to the boys disgust as Johnny likes to read every plaque available), beautiful parks, city squares, enourmous football stadiums (thanks Seb) ancient ruins and generally walked the streets of Mexico City until our shoes have worn holes in! We have stayed in a fab area where there are cafes and restaurants a plenty, and very upmarket ones at that, but there is a reminde...
