Mariposa Monarca butterflies

We left Mexico City via bus a few days ago to a town called Zitácuaro so that we could visit a UNESCO heritage site to see millions of Monarch butterflies that fly to this area for a few months of the year. The butterflies come to mate in the pine forests, which are absolutely beautiful and featured on one of David Attenborough programmes. On the big climb up to see the butterflies, which was a bit of an undertaking considering the high altitude (in fact only the hardy don’t take the horse!!!), we saw lots of wildlife including hummingbirds and an amazing red bird. Take a look here at what we’ve seen if you would like. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b010t6c0.

The actual place was very surreal considering it was a world heritage site. According to Seb, the place was full of ‘dodgies’ and Americans (on horses!!), and of course we were met at the entrance by the enormous police truck with machine guns at the ready!!!

We treated ourselves to a beautiful hotel with a swimming pool to escape the chaos of the city!

The policeman with the machine gun was definitely winking at me!!
