Playa Brasilito and Playa Conchal

Image
We haven’t really got a firm plan for our travels in Costa Rica, and I would say that we are definitely ‘winging-it’ on this leg. This is definitely one of the struggles of family travelling, trying to juggle everyone’s needs and having enough time to look at where you are going next. So our google search in the car on leaving Rincon described a beautiful white-sandy beach, Playa Conchal, voted the most beautiful beach in the world…ok, we point the car in that direction!  After a few hours in the car (what an absolute luxury), we arrive at a little camping spot right on the beach in Playa Brasilia, a 10 minute walk from Playa Concha (the poor man’s beach!!). It’s a lovely little locals beach spot, with signs up warning you not to swim in one area due to the crocodiles, so we move up a few metres, and plonk our tent there!  After settling ourselves in, we have a wander and find a top-notch restaurant right on the beach where we  order 4 glasses of tap water, and 1 smo...

Costa Rica - Liberia and Rincon de la Vieja

Image
We left Nicaragua in what we think may be our last chicken bus, utter relief from the boys! We went out ‘in-style’ on-it, as we were crammed into the back of the thing, literally like chickens, with Tristan being told to sit on a bucket! I would have loved to have taken a picture of us, but there wasn’t room for me to lift my arm 😂.  Apart from being a very long walk to the Costa Rican boarder, we had no problems crossing and we quickly found transport through to Liberia, the nearest major town. I have to admit, we all had a sense of relief when we arrived in Costa Rica, as it felt like ‘we’d made it’, leaving behind far more developing countries, for a while at least.  One of our first visits in Costa Rica was to Wal-Mart!! I know this sounds daft, but this was a very exciting outing as it was literally the first time we’d seen a ‘normal’ shop selling goods that weren't knock-offs’ in 3 1/2 months, and boy-oh-boy, this really did feel great. It was also a great opportunity f...

Playa Maderas

Image
After our 4 noisy nights in San Juan, we jumped on another bus  to a beach a few kilometres away called Playa Maderas. This beach was very remote, so we armed with enough food and drink for our stay, and  OMG we looked ridiculous carrying our backpacks and shopping bags up to our accommodation, that just happened to be at the top of the steepest hill in Nicaragua! But was it worth it….YES! When we made it to the top, the accommodation was a massive beautiful thatched house with a yoga deck overlooking the bay 😁. Paradise!  Next stop the beach and thank goodness, no loud music, just an absolutely spectacular little bay, such a relief after our Blackpool experience. The beach had pink ‘tinged’ sand and it literally felt like silk, with the finest sand I’ve ever felt. What more can I say about our few days chilling out here……. we had some surfing lessons; mucked around in the water; watched beautiful sunsets with the sun setting through the rocks; drank beer and c...
