Leon

We arrive in Leon, another pretty typical Central American colonial style city.  Initial impressions are of a poorer city as compared to those in El Salvador, with obvious scars of recent troubles, the most recent in 2018. The countries seem to be getting poorer as we travel down through Central America, and OMG it’s certainly getting hotter. We all slept in starfish positions last night with nothing but swimmers / bikinis on, and with a fan on each of us (no AC available), and it was the hottest night of our lives (oh actually, the tent was a close tie!). Once again, we are amazingly proud of how the boys are coping with all of this, as despite the massive excitements, there are many challenging situations and I definitely struggle with the heat the most.

We spend a few days exploring the city, including a walking tour and also a visit to a local waterpark (slight safety issues here and many live interests for the boys but we didn’t die and the boys weren’t quite held to ransom !!). We meet many other English travellers in Leon and have a few lovely nights out sharing travellers tales which is great fun for all of us, including a lovely pair of brothers (Jake and Fin) who have cycled from Mexico to here. It’s amazing how much you appreciate seeing ‘your own’ when you are away.

Next stop…a whole week in the mountains in a place called ‘La Mariposa’ La Mariposa Spanish School & Eco-Hotel, where we will be staying in a homestay, and volunteering with all different projects. The boys can hopefully teach some Spanish in a local school and work with the animal rescue; Johnny can use his engineer head with water / building projects and for me, I can work in one of the local clinics with vaccinations / education etc. but who knows.

  1. Just read up about La Mariposa. Sounds like a winner and betting you might be there longer than a week (as long as it doesn't get too hot). You could come home; we have had 3 days of pure sun with more days to come! Diana is booking tickets to your presentation on your return! A must. (Hope the budget is surviving!)
