Xpujil
We left Palenque to be naively conned by the very ‘helpful’ taxi driver who told us he would take us to a place where we could catch a bus to our next destination as this would be much cheaper and easier. The taxi driver dropped us off on a busy highway in the middle of nowhere, where a man was selling bus tickets. OMG, they are 3x the price than they should have been but we have no choice…we are in the middle of nowhere! The next minute, a dilapidated local bus rocks up to take us on our merry way. It was in need of a little TLC to say the least 😳, and the look of horror on the boys faces (and ours) was a picture. Ho-hum, this is travelling, you win some, you lose some.
So we survived the local bus, well nearly! We collected our precious rucksacks to find that they are soaking wet, as the bottom of the bus appeared to have a ventilation system that let dirty-ditch water up into the luggage compartment. Not the finest moment of the trip so far!
We arrive at our destination (Xpujil), OMG it feels like the back-end to nowhere! Manky dogs greet us at the bus station and them proceed to chase us up the immensely dusty road. Oh geez, where the hell are we.
We walk and find some luxury accommodation (definitely not luxury, akin to the dodgy campsite) that has a rainforest growing up inside it! Im proud of the boys, they are coping well.
Bad to worse…we try to organise our jungle tour, the reason for our trip here, to find out that it’s going to be £500. No way José!
Now we have to bring out our disaster-ending thinking caps …I know, let’s do a trip to some more Mayan ruins (Becan ruins). The boys moan a lot as they don’t want to see any more bleedin’ ruins but thankfully, the ruins don’t let us down. They are only a few minutes away and they are incredible; huge-great things that are scarily steep to climb with just a flimsy bit of frayed rope preventing our beloved children falling to their death! Still, it was a great view 😂. They are right in the middle of the jungle, literally endless jungle as far as the eye can see with just the sound of toucans and other beautiful birds surrounding us. Thank goodness.
Back for some good ol’ tacos at a street cafe and Xpujil doesn’t seem like such a bad place after all. As always, we have been met with nothing but help and kindness in this little back-of-beyond town.
This has been a tough few days but we have thankfully seen the funny side of it….. onwards we go on the next bus to civilisation!!
