Sumidero canyon

We left our beautiful coastal paradise for something of a very new experience for us all, an 11 hour night bus. This took us away from the coast, back up in to the mountain areas, this time to visit a magnificent canyon. The boys handled the night bus incredibly well, in fact they both slept from the minute they put their heads down, for us bigger people, not quite so much 🥴.

We arrived in the city of Tuxtla, the state of Chiapas capital. The city was much more modern, with actual out-of-town superstores such as H&M, Office Depot etc!! The city was just a quick stop on our way to Chiapa de Corzo, a destination where we could get on a boat to visit the Sumidero canyon. The canyon is 13km long, with vertical walls with are over 1000m high. Pictures rarely capture the magnificence of somewhere and mine certainly don’t, but this canyon was quite incredible. The river through the canyon was lined with beautiful wildlife, including birds (I’m not sure of the names but they were flying ones!), spider monkeys and some snappy little crocodiles. Well worth the long bus ride.
