Slight change of plans on Day 1…. We can laugh now

So, not the greatest start to the trip when you arrive at Gatwick to find out you can’t get on your first flight 😳. We got asked for our VISAs, we looked dumb and get told, No VISA, no flighty’!. Heart sinking moment but after a few hours of cursing ourselves and our kids thinking they would be back at school in a few days, we overcome our first hurdle and booked a flight to somewhere completely different! Off we flew to 🇲🇽 Mexico City!

Final preparations just taking place for our big trip. The house is looking, er like our usual house! Lots of work for us tomorrow, and the next day and probably even the morning of the 2nd January. Oh geez we really do have so much stuff 😖. I’m sure an awful lot of stuff we are packing up will go straight in the bin on our return 😂. So how are we feeling: sad to be saying goodbye for now to everyone that we love to be with ❤️, and also excited / apprehensive about what is to come. We don’t quite know what to expect or even where we are going, but we are very much looking forward to the adventure that lays ahead….  What an absolute miracle that this technophobe has worked out how to set this up 😂

The Salkantay Trail: the start of the trek

We decided to do the trek unguided to create a bit more adventure, and to allow us to go at our own pace as it’s a blinkin’ long way, at very high altitude (the highest point 4630 metres). We had no idea how we would all cope, and we wanted to do it at our own pace but saying that, the boys are probably quicker than us and many of the other rather unfit looking characters attempting the trail 😂. What this did mean, is that we would have to carry the backpacks, and with all the chocolate snacks, this was no easy task unless we could find an empty horse 😳😂.  Day 1: Mollepata to Soraypampa  We avoided a really early start from Cusco to the start of the trek by spending a night in a little Peruvian mountain town, Mollepata. Of course this came with the usual hiccup due to a lack of cash, so we all ended up having to share a double bed! Paracas

A quick trip to a beachside town, Paracas,  before heading to Lima, our final stop. Paracas is known as the ‘poor man’s Galapagos’ which is what enticed us to the area.  Our love and appreciation for nature has definitely grown during our trip, and we couldn’t miss an opportunity to see the local sea life. We did succumb to a tourist boat to reach the ‘Islas de la Ballestas’ as we had mo choice but to take a tour with this one, so off we went with the American OAPS to observe the humboldt penguin, sea lions, chilean flamingo, inca turns, Peruvian pelicans, black skimmer, red-legged cormorants, blue footed boobies ☺️. And what a damn fine trip it was, which I think the OAPs filmed the entire trip, poor grandchildren 🤣. The nature spotting was fantastic and definitely worth the trip but sadly, after the mass mortality of many birds and sea lions back in 2023 due to bird-flu, the reserve was much depleted.  We then visited the Paracas nature reserve, an enormous ...
